Functions of Accumulators

The amount of stored hydraulic fluid is the difference between the original gas volume and the newly compressed volume. A 1-liter gas collector half-filled with hydraulic fluid will contain 2 liters of compressed gas and 2 liters of stored hydraulic fluid.

Piston collectors: These are made of piston cylinders. The piston seals have separation elements that separate the gas from the liquid. Like all gas collectors, they are at a pre-charged (p0) pressure which is less than the minimum hydraulic pressure (p1). This is because the hydraulic pressure will always prevent the piston from going down.

Oil over the air: The over-the-air oil system is a simpler version of the collector. However, there are some serious limitations. It should be installed vertically and have a relatively low-pressure system. High-pressure air can get very hot and cause the ignition of hydraulic fluid. As shown in the example, the hydraulic pressure will be the same as the air pressure. Because there is no obstruction between air and hydraulic fluid, the unit should not move too much. Movement and vibration can cause air to mix with hydraulic fluids, causing acidity in the system.


Where will you locate an accumulator?

An accumulator is located near the pump with a test valve to save you backflow to the pump. In the case of piston pumps, this accumulator is preferably located to take in the strength pulsations from the multi-piston pump.
